The usual lacrosse game starts out when the players of both teams spread out in the field, assuming their respective positions. That’s basically the same concept used in other popular sports like football, soccer, and field hockey. As a matter of fact, the positioning is pretty much the same to that of soccer. This is when players will be positioning themselves based on the type of ground where the game will be played. For lacrosse though, the typical scenario is that there will be people who will be going towards the net in for defense while some will be positioned at midfield and side of the competing team, which is gearing up for offense. And yes, just like any other team sports, there is offense and defense, each time doing its best to score on the opposition.

But the net or goal used in lacrosse is obviously a lot smaller compared to that of the game of soccer. Likewise, they are placed further into the field and not at the very side. Perhaps the main reason for this arrangement is the fact that the lacrosse ball is smaller. If the net is bigger than what it is now, then scoring a goal would be like a feast for the offensive team. Moreover, the reason why the net is further into the field because if it was at the very side, then the players will be required to cover more distance when running.

Lacrosse, compared to soccer and American football, is more of the ideal non-contact sports. That is probably the reason why most parents will choose it over the two mentioned sports. Although soccer and American football are officially considered as non-contact, everyone knows the kind of physicality being introduced and shown by professional leagues. In lacrosse, there are no rough tactics like tackling or sliding opponents down. Therefore, it is certainly a lot less violent. Even if there is collision and bumping, they’re not on the same level of roughness in American football.

There is also some similarity between lacrosse and field hockey. The obvious one is the use of a stick. At first impression, one would question why there’s a need for a stick when it is easier to use the hands in taking control of the ball, including passing and receiving. However, the use of the stick is what makes the sport very challenging skills wise and popular in the process. With the stick, there are so many other factors to consider in order to learn how to control the ball. There is more emphasis on being precise in the movement of the hands for the stick to grab the ball, defend position, attack, and attempt a shot. In soccer, it’s simply learning the tricks of dribbling or handling the ball using the feet, chest, and head.
With the challenge of the stick, there’s no doubt that for a youngster to become a very good lacrosse player, there should be emphasis on good cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Cardio and leg strength are of utmost importance because the game will require a lot of running.

And as you can see, lacrosse bears a lot of similarities to other popular sports, as well as notable differences. But one thing is for sure: it is fun, ideal for kids’ physical training, particularly strength and conditioning, and very competitive.

Equipment a Lacrosse Goalie Must Have

For a young and upcoming lacrosse goalie, being scared of a ball coming at you at full speed is something normal. If you feel otherwise, then you’re something else, maybe. A hard ball traveling at a high speed will definitely hurt as it hits your body. That’s why becoming a lacrosse goalie is something that requires a lot of skills and more importantly, courage.

For a young and aspiring goalie in you, the very first thing you need to guarantee when you go up for training is to wear as much protection as possible. Even adults and pro players get hurt when peppered and bombarded by rubber balls. The good news is there are so many great lacrosse equipment available today to provide utmost protection.

Here’s a short breakdown of the most essential equipment you need:

1 – Helmet

Get the best out there. Even if it is expensive, you need that will provide the best protection for your head and face. Keep in mind that concussions are prevalent in lacrosse, especially when goalkeepers are hit in the face and head through a shot on the blind side. A top of the line helmet will do the trick in protecting your head though. Part of it is the throat guard that will cover the neck potion. Remember, the throat guard is as important as the helmet. A hit in the larynx can cause fatality.

2 – Goalie Cup

Get a real goalie cup if you want the best protection possible. Most parents will allow their kids to wear those plastic cups and jocks because they are trendy and comfortable. But they don’t offer the kind of protection needed for a goalie cup. Instead, get an authentic variety that comes with extra hip padding.

3 – Soccer Shin Pads

This gear is light and it is vital for quick movement. These pads protect the shins. While most young players don’t want to wear one, it can be remedied by wearing sweats on top of them. However, do not substitute a soccer shin pad with baseball pads because they’re too heavy and bulky. They will certainly slow you down.

4 – Chest Protector

Your head, face, and neck aren’t the only parts of your body that will be subjected or targets of the hard rubber ball. You also need the best protection and gear for your chest or upper body. So go get a reliable but light chest protector. Do not go for fancy ones with so many accessories on them. What you simply need is something that guarantees your heart and chest are protected. There are those with arm and shoulder protection but they make it harder for you to move. Just accept the fact that your arms will get bruises from time to time.

5 – Goalie Gloves

The best type you can obtain is a pair of gloves with thumb protection. Probably the most common injury for lacrosse goalkeepers is a broken thumb. Hence, there’s no point in using gloves that do not have a protection for your thumb.
